For an extra touch of flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg or cloves to the dry ingredients. Feel free to substitute other types of chocolate chips, such as milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate. Chopped nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, can also be added to the batter. Store leftover muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week. These muffins freeze well. Wrap them individually in plastic wrap and store them in a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
