Let cool slightly before using. If you don't have buttermilk on hand, you can substitute it with regular milk mixed with a tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar. Let it sit for a few minutes to curdle slightly before using. The casserole can be assembled ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Add 10 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
