To make sour milk: Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to a liquid measuring cup. Add enough milk to reach the 1-cup line. Let stand for 5 minutes before using. For a richer flavor, use melted butter instead of vegetable oil. Feel free to add a handful of raisins or other dried fruit to the batter along with the apples. Store leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
