Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease two 8-ounce ramekins and place them on a baking sheet. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Make the filling: Combine apples, 2 tablespoons maple syrup, lemon juice, vanilla extract, 0.5 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and 1 pinch of salt in a bowl; toss until thoroughly mixed. Divide mixture between the prepared ramekins. (10 minutes)

03

Step

Prepare the topping: Combine oats, flour, 1 tablespoon maple syrup, 0.25 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 pinch of salt in a bowl; mix until thoroughly combined. Cut in softened butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle crumb topping evenly on top of the filling in the ramekins. (5 minutes)

04

Step

Place baking sheet with ramekins into the preheated oven and bake until apples are tender and the topping is slightly browned, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of chopped walnuts or pecans to the topping.
If you prefer a sweeter crisp, increase the maple syrup in both the filling and topping by a tablespoon each.
Adjust baking time based on your oven; check for doneness starting at 25 minutes to prevent burning.
Serve warm with a dollop of Greek yogurt or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an enhanced dessert experience.

The spices are spot on. The nutmeg and allspice really make it special. I added a touch of ginger too, which was a nice addition.

I appreciate that this recipe uses whole wheat flour and oats. It feels much healthier than traditional apple crisp recipes.

My topping didn't get as brown as I wanted, so I broiled it for the last minute. Keep an eye on it so it doesn't burn!
