Follow The Directions

01

Step

Prepare the Jalapenos: Position an oven rack about 6 inches from the broiler and preheat to high. Place jalapenos on a baking sheet. (Prep time: 2 minutes)

02

Step

Broil the Jalapenos: Broil, turning every 2-3 minutes, until the skin is blackened and bubbling. (Cook time: 8-10 minutes)

03

Step

Steam and Peel: Transfer jalapenos to a resealable plastic bag and seal. Let steam for 5-10 minutes. Carefully open the bag, remove peppers, and peel off the blackened skin. Slice open, remove the seeds, and mince. (Prep time: 15-20 minutes)

04

Step

Create the Glaze: In a saucepan, combine minced jalapenos, blackberries, water, brown sugar, honey, orange juice, orange-flavored liqueur, garlic, and orange zest. Simmer over medium heat for 5-10 minutes. (Cook time: 5-10 minutes)

05

Step

Reduce and Mash: Reduce heat to low and continue simmering until the glaze has thickened, another 5-10 minutes. Mash with a potato masher to break down the blackberries. Remove from heat. (Cook time: 5-10 minutes)

06

Step

Glaze and Bake: Reduce oven temperature to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Place the ham in a roasting pan and brush with some of the glaze. Cover loosely with aluminum foil. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

07

Step

Baste and Bake: Bake, basting with glaze every 20 minutes, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center reads at least 145 degrees F (63 degrees C), about 3 hours. (Cook time: ~3 hours)

08

Step

Rest and Serve: Remove ham from oven and brush with more glaze. Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing. (Rest time: 10 minutes)

For a milder flavor, remove the seeds and membranes from the jalapenos more thoroughly.
If you don't have orange-flavored liqueur, you can substitute with additional orange juice or a splash of Grand Marnier.
The glaze can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Bring to room temperature before using.

The glaze was a bit too spicy for my kids, so next time I'll use less jalapeno, but the adults loved it!

This was a showstopper! The blackberry and jalapeno were an unexpected but amazing combination. Will definitely make again!
