Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Prepare a 6-cup jumbo muffin pan with liners or grease generously with butter. (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a small bowl, combine the chilled butter, flour, brown sugar, and chopped walnuts for the crumb topping. Use a fork to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside. (10 minutes)

03

Step

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and melted butter until well combined. Add the packed brown sugar, applesauce, and vanilla extract. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and homogenous. (5 minutes)

04

Step

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mixing only until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. (5 minutes)

05

Step

Fill each muffin cup approximately 2/3 full with batter. Sprinkle the prepared crumb topping evenly over the muffin batter. (5 minutes)

06

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. (25 minutes)

07

Step

Remove the muffins from the pan and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before serving. (10 minutes)

For an extra nutty flavor, toast the walnuts lightly before chopping.
Feel free to substitute pecans or almonds for the walnuts in the streusel topping.
Store the cooled muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
These muffins also freeze well. Wrap individually in plastic wrap and store in a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
