For an even richer flavor, consider searing the beef in a mixture of butter and olive oil. If you prefer a thicker gravy, whisk a tablespoon of cornstarch with two tablespoons of cold water and stir into the gravy during the last 5 minutes of cooking. Remove the bay leaf before serving.
