Follow The Directions

01

Step
0 mins

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

02

Step
12 mins

Heat olive oil in a 10-inch cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add bell pepper, onion, garlic, and salt. Cook, stirring often, until the onion begins to soften. Add in ground beef and cook, crumbling with a wooden spoon, until browned.

03

Step
8 mins

Add ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper. Cook, stirring constantly. Mix in 2 teaspoons of hot sauce, tomato paste, and water, stirring to combine. Bring mixture to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly. Remove from heat and smooth the mixture out evenly in the skillet. Lay pickle slices evenly over the top.

04

Step
2 mins

In a bowl, stir together cornbread mix, egg, milk, sour cream, Cheddar cheese, and remaining hot sauce until just combined. Pour batter evenly over the meat mixture.

05

Step
24 mins

Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown and bubbly around the edges.

For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sloppy Joe mixture.
Feel free to substitute ground turkey or chicken for the ground beef.
If you don't have sour cream, plain yogurt can be used as a substitute.
Make sure not to overmix the cornbread batter, as this can result in a tough cornbread.
