Follow The Directions

01

Step

Prepare the Apples: Gently wash and thoroughly dry the Granny Smith apples. Insert a wooden stick firmly into the stem end of each apple, pushing it about 3/4 of the way through. Place the prepared apples on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. (Prep time: 15 minutes)

02

Step

Melt the Caramel: In a medium saucepan, combine the unwrapped caramels and heavy cream (or water). Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the caramel is completely melted and smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract. Maintain a low heat to keep the caramel fluid. (Cook time: 15-20 minutes)

03

Step

Coat with Caramel: One at a time, dip each apple into the melted caramel, rotating to ensure even coating. Gently lift the apple and allow any excess caramel to drip back into the saucepan. Use the side of the pan to scrape off excess caramel from the bottom of the apple. (Coating time: 5 minutes)

04

Step

Apply Trail Mix: Spread the coarsely chopped trail mix onto a shallow dish or plate. Immediately roll the caramel-coated apple in the trail mix, pressing gently to ensure the mixture adheres well. (Application time: 5 minutes)

05

Step

Chill and Harden: Place the trail mix-coated apples back on the parchment-lined baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the caramel to set. (Chilling time: 30 minutes)

06

Step

Drizzle with Chocolate: Place the semi-sweet chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each interval, until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the chilled caramel apples. (Melting time: 2-3 minutes)

07

Step

Final Chill: Return the chocolate-drizzled apples to the refrigerator for another 15-20 minutes to allow the chocolate to set completely. (Final chilling: 15-20 minutes)

08

Step

Serve and Enjoy: Remove the apples from the refrigerator about 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy the perfect combination of tart apple, sweet caramel, crunchy trail mix, and rich chocolate! (Serving time: 10 minutes)

For easier caramel melting, use a double boiler.
Ensure the apples are completely dry before dipping to help the caramel adhere better.
Experiment with different types of trail mix to customize the flavor.
Add a pinch of sea salt to the melted chocolate for a salted caramel effect.
If you don't have trail mix, chopped nuts like pecans, walnuts, or peanuts work well.
