For a richer flavor, try using apple cider vinegar instead of white vinegar. Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper to control the level of spiciness. Start with less and add more to taste. If you don't have brown sugar, you can substitute with an equal amount of granulated sugar and a tablespoon of molasses. For a smoky flavor, add a teaspoon of liquid smoke to the slow cooker during the last hour of cooking.
