Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a large, heavy-bottomed skillet, heat over medium-high heat. Add the sausage, breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook until browned and crumbly, about 7 minutes. Add the mushrooms, shallots, butter, and olive oil. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms and shallots are softened and lightly browned, approximately 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 to 2 minutes. Pour in the white wine and allow it to simmer until reduced by half, around 5 minutes.

02

Step

While the sausage mixture simmers, bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a rolling boil. Add the gnocchi and cook until they float to the surface, indicating they are cooked through, about 2 to 4 minutes. Drain the gnocchi well.

03

Step

Add the drained gnocchi to the skillet with the sausage and mushroom mixture. Pour in the heavy cream, and stir in the Italian herbs and red pepper flakes. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to your liking. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and coats the gnocchi, about 10 minutes.

For an even richer flavor, consider using a high-quality Italian sausage.
Feel free to experiment with different types of mushrooms, such as cremini or shiitake.
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese can be added as a garnish, but it's truly delightful even without it.

The sausage was a little salty for me, so next time I'll try using less or omitting the salt altogether.
