Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a gratin baking dish with butter. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Heat 1 tablespoon butter and olive oil in a large skillet over low heat; add onions and sage. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are browned and deeply caramelized, about 25 minutes. Season generously with salt and black pepper. (30 minutes)

03

Step

Place a steamer insert into a saucepan and fill with water to just below the bottom of the steamer. Bring water to a boil. Add squash, cover, and steam until fork-tender, 10 to 20 minutes. Transfer squash to prepared gratin dish; toss with garlic and 3/4 teaspoon salt. Add the caramelized onions to the pan and gently mix to combine. (30 minutes)

04

Step

Warm cream in a saucepan over low heat; pour over squash mixture. Stir gently to coat, ensuring every piece is lovingly embraced by the cream. (5 minutes)

05

Step

Combine bread crumbs and 1 1/2 tablespoons melted butter together in a bowl; sprinkle evenly over squash mixture, creating a golden blanket of deliciousness. (5 minutes)

06

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until gratin is bubbling, the cream sauce is thickened, and breadcrumbs are beautifully browned, 20 to 25 minutes. Let rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. (30 minutes)

For an even richer flavor, consider using brown butter for the breadcrumb topping.
A pinch of nutmeg added to the cream sauce will enhance the warmth of the dish.
Feel free to substitute Gruyere or Parmesan cheese for the breadcrumbs for a cheesier gratin.

So easy to make and absolutely delicious. I used dried sage since I didn't have fresh, and it still turned out great.

The breadcrumbs got a little too brown, so I covered it with foil for the last 10 minutes as suggested, and it was perfect!
