Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Place peeled and cored apples in a bowl of cold water; set aside while preparing the dough. (2 minutes)

03

Step

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in shortening using a pastry blender or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add milk and stir until the dough just comes together. In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup of brown sugar and cinnamon. (15 minutes)

04

Step

Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion out to about ¼-inch thickness. Place 1 apple in the center of each dough circle. Fill the core of each apple with the cinnamon-brown sugar mixture. Wrap the dough around the apples, ensuring they are completely enclosed. Place the wrapped dumplings into the prepared baking dish. (25 minutes)

05

Step

In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the remaining 2 cups of brown sugar, water, butter, and nutmeg. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely dissolved and the butter is melted, about 5 minutes. (5 minutes)

06

Step

Pour the brown sugar syrup evenly over the dumplings in the baking dish. (2 minutes)

07

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until the dumplings are golden brown and the apples are tender, approximately 40 minutes. (40 minutes)

For best results, use firm baking apples such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Braeburn.
To prevent the dough from becoming soggy, ensure the apples are well-drained before wrapping them.
If the dumpling tops are browning too quickly, tent the baking dish with foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat.

I added a little bit of lemon zest to the dough and it gave it a wonderful brightness.

Next time, I'm going to try using different types of apples. Maybe a mix of sweet and tart varieties.
