For best results, use slightly stale white bread, as it will hold its shape better during frying. Don't overcrowd the pot when frying; this will lower the oil temperature and result in greasy doughnuts. If you don't have a deep-fryer, a large, heavy-bottomed pot works just as well. Just be sure to monitor the oil temperature closely. Experiment with different flavors of jam to create your own unique jelly doughnut variations.
