For an even smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to blend the sauce after simmering. This sauce freezes exceptionally well. Allow it to cool completely before transferring it to freezer-safe bags or containers. Consider adding a splash of red wine vinegar or a bay leaf during simmering for extra depth of flavor (remember to remove the bay leaf before serving). Vary the meat blend to your liking. Ground turkey or chicken can be substituted for a lighter option. A pinch of red pepper flakes can provide a mild heat if desired.
