Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking them up with a spoon until fully cooked and crumbly (5-10 minutes). Drain off any excess grease.

02

Step

Using a food processor, finely chop the quartered carrots and onion until they are almost a puree.

03

Step

In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped carrots, onion, and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent and the vegetables are softened (about 5 minutes).

04

Step

Stir in the cooked ground beef and sausage mixture, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried oregano, brown sugar, dried basil, black pepper, and ground cinnamon into the saucepan with the vegetable base. Mix well to combine.

05

Step

Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, allowing the flavors to meld and deepen (about 30 minutes).

06

Step

Season the sauce with salt to your liking. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

For an even smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to blend the sauce after simmering.
This sauce freezes exceptionally well. Allow it to cool completely before transferring it to freezer-safe bags or containers.
Consider adding a splash of red wine vinegar or a bay leaf during simmering for extra depth of flavor (remember to remove the bay leaf before serving).
Vary the meat blend to your liking. Ground turkey or chicken can be substituted for a lighter option.
A pinch of red pepper flakes can provide a mild heat if desired.
