Savor the comforting taste of tradition with these perfectly seasoned mixed greens. A harmonious blend of collard, mustard, and turnip greens, simmered to tender perfection with savory bacon, aromatic garlic, and a hint of sweetness. Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Remove the leaves from the collard, mustard, and turnip greens, discarding the stems. Gently wash the leaves in warm water to remove all traces of soil and sand. (5 minutes)

02

Step
15 mins

Partially fill a clean sink with warm water. Stir in 2 cups of chicken broth and 3 tablespoons of salt. Allow the greens to soak in this mixture for 10 minutes. This step helps to tenderize the greens and infuse them with flavor. (15 minutes)

03

Step
2 mins

Scoop the greens into a colander and allow them to drain thoroughly; do not rinse. Discard the chicken broth mixture.

04

Step
8 mins

Pour the remaining 2 cups of chicken broth into a large, heavy-bottomed pot. Add the drained greens. (2 minutes)

05

Step
1 hrs

Stir in the vegetable oil, bacon bits, sugar, sliced garlic, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. (8 minutes)

06

Step

Once boiling, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Cover the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until the greens are tender and have absorbed the flavorful broth, approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. (60 minutes)

For an even richer flavor, consider using smoked bacon bits. The smokiness will add a delightful depth to the greens.
Adjust the amount of sugar to your liking. Some prefer a sweeter taste, while others prefer a more savory profile. Start with the recommended amount and add more as needed.
If you don't have fresh garlic, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder can be substituted. However, fresh garlic provides the best flavor.
The cooking time may vary depending on the tenderness of the greens. Check for doneness after 45 minutes and continue to simmer until they reach your desired tenderness.
