In a medium saucepan, combine the water and maple syrup. Bring to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. (2 minutes)

Add the cranberries to the boiling syrup mixture. Continue to cook at a boil, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries begin to pop and the sauce thickens slightly. (10-15 minutes)

Reduce heat to low. Stir in the brown sugar and lemon juice, ensuring the sugar is completely dissolved. (1 minute)

Remove from heat and stir in the brandy (if using). Allow the sauce to cool slightly; it will continue to thicken as it cools. (5 minutes)

For a smoother sauce, gently mash some of the cranberries after they have popped. This releases more of their pectin and helps to thicken the sauce.
The brandy adds a lovely warmth and depth of flavor, but can be omitted for an alcohol-free version. Consider substituting with 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
This cranberry sauce can be made up to 3 days in advance. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Its flavors will meld and deepen over time.
