Follow The Directions

01

Step
1 mins

Using a bottle opener, carefully create two small holes on opposite sides of the sweetened condensed milk can. (1 minute)

02

Step
5 mins

Place the can in a small saucepan and add water until it reaches high up the sides of the can. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. (5 minutes)

03

Step
3 hrs 30 mins

Simmer the milk in the can for 3 to 4 hours, until it turns a light to medium brown color and thickens. Be sure to check the water level periodically, adding more as it evaporates to maintain the level. (3-4 hours)

04

Step
5 mins

Carefully remove the lid from the can and transfer the dulce de leche to a bowl. Whisk vigorously to break up any lumps and ensure a smooth, uniform consistency, incorporating the thicker caramel from the bottom. (5 minutes)

For a richer flavor, try using a higher-quality sweetened condensed milk.
Be cautious when opening the can after simmering, as the contents will be hot.
If you prefer a thicker dulce de leche, simmer for a longer period, checking frequently to prevent burning.
Store your homemade dulce de leche in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
