Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, yeast, and 2 teaspoons of white sugar. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

02

Step

In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the milk and water. Heat in the microwave until lukewarm (about 20 seconds). Gradually pour the warm milk mixture into the flour mixture, stirring with a fork until a shaggy dough forms. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

03

Step

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 2 minutes. The dough will be sticky at this stage. Add the salt and continue to knead until the dough becomes smoother and more elastic, approximately 2 minutes more. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

04

Step

Shape the dough into a ball, place it in a lightly floured bowl, cover with a damp paper towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 10 minutes. (Rise time: 10 minutes)

05

Step

In a resealable plastic bag or a bowl, combine the brown sugar, 1/4 cup white sugar, chopped walnuts, ground sesame seeds, and cinnamon. Seal the bag and shake well to combine the filling ingredients evenly. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

06

Step

Gently roll the dough into a cylinder and divide it into 10 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

07

Step

Using a rolling pin, roll each ball into a 5-inch circle. Hold the circle in the palm of your hand and spoon about 2 tablespoons of the filling into the center. Bring the edges of the dough up and around the filling, pinching them together to form a sealed ball. Place the filled balls seam-side down on a lightly floured surface. (Prep time: 15 minutes)

08

Step

Gently roll each filled ball into a 5-inch circle, being careful not to let the filling escape. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

09

Step

Melt the margarine in a skillet over medium heat, spreading it evenly. Place the rolled Hotteok in the skillet and cook until golden brown, about 5-10 minutes per side. Serve hot and enjoy! (Cook time: 10-20 minutes)

For an extra nutty flavor, toast the walnuts and sesame seeds before adding them to the filling.
If the dough is too sticky to handle, lightly flour your hands.
Feel free to experiment with different fillings, such as chopped peanuts, seeds, or even a sweet red bean paste.
Adjust the amount of sugar in the filling to suit your taste.

I had some trouble with the dough being too sticky, but adding a little more flour helped. The end result was worth it!
