Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a medium bowl, combine 1/2 cup (1 stick) of the softened butter with the German chocolate cake mix and egg. Use your hands to work the mixture until well blended and crumbly. (5 minutes)

03

Step

Press the crumbly mixture evenly into a 10x15 inch jelly roll pan. (2 minutes)

04

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. Remove and let cool for 10 minutes. (20 minutes)

05

Step

In a medium saucepan, combine the remaining 1/2 cup (1 stick) of butter with the evaporated milk and unwrapped caramels. Melt over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until smooth. (10 minutes)

06

Step

Remove the caramel mixture from the heat and pour it evenly over the partially baked crust, tilting the pan to ensure it's fully coated. (2 minutes)

07

Step

Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the caramel is bubbly and lightly browned. (20 minutes)

08

Step

Remove from the oven and let cool completely. (30 minutes)

09

Step

While the bars are cooling, prepare the icing: In a small bowl, whisk together the confectioners' sugar, milk (or water), and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more liquid or sugar as needed. (5 minutes)

10

Step

Drizzle the icing evenly over the cooled caramel bars. Let the icing set before cutting into squares. (15 minutes)

11

Step

Cut into squares and serve. Enjoy! (2 minutes)

For a richer flavor, use salted butter in the caramel layer.
Line the jelly roll pan with parchment paper for easy removal and cleanup.
Store the bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Add a pinch of sea salt on top of the caramel layer before baking to enhance the sweetness.

My caramel layer was too runny. I think I needed to cook it longer.
