Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Combine apple slices, sugar, and apple pie spice in a slow cooker. Stir well to ensure even distribution. (5 minutes)

02

Step
6 hrs 30 mins

Cook on High heat for 4 hours, then stir to prevent sticking. Remove the lid and continue cooking until the apples are very tender and most of the liquid has evaporated, approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours. The mixture should be thick and caramelized. (6 hours 30 minutes)

03

Step
8 hrs

Carefully transfer the apple butter to a heat-safe bowl. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken further. (8 hours)

04

Step
10 mins

Use an immersion blender to puree the apple butter until smooth. Alternatively, process it through a food mill for a rustic texture or blend in a regular blender in batches, being cautious of hot liquids. (10 minutes)

For a richer flavor, add a tablespoon of vanilla extract after blending.
Adjust the amount of apple pie spice to your preference.
Store apple butter in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for longer storage.

I tried this recipe with a mix of Granny Smith and Fuji apples and it turned out fantastic! The tartness of the Granny Smith apples balanced the sweetness perfectly.
