Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

In a large bowl, whisk together warm milk, 1/2 cup sugar, warm water, and 2 tablespoons melted butter until sugar is dissolved. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let stand for 5 minutes to activate. (5 minutes)

02

Step
1 hrs 8 mins

Once the yeast is foamy, stir in the flour gradually, adding more as needed to form a stiff dough. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes. Place the dough into an oiled bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. (1 hour)

03

Step
2 mins

In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1/2 cup sugar, cinnamon, and cardamom. Set aside. (2 minutes)

04

Step
1 hrs 15 mins

Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a 9x13-inch rectangle and brush with 1/2 cup melted butter. Sprinkle with the cardamom-sugar mixture, raisins, and walnuts. Roll the rectangle tightly into a log, pinch the edges closed to seal, and place it onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Cover with a cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. (1 hour)

05

Step
10 mins

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). (10 minutes)

06

Step
5 mins

Using a sharp knife or kitchen scissors, score the top of the roll with V-shapes that don't quite meet in the middle, the whole length of the roll. This creates an attractive braided appearance, but it's optional. (5 minutes)

07

Step
5 mins

In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon water until well combined. Brush the egg wash evenly over the top of the bread. Sprinkle with sliced almonds and pearl sugar. (5 minutes)

08

Step
33 mins

Bake in the preheated oven until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving. (30-35 minutes)

For a richer flavor, use brown butter instead of melted butter for brushing.
Feel free to substitute other nuts or dried fruits according to your preference; pecans and dried cranberries would also be delicious.
Ensure your yeast is fresh for optimal rising. If it doesn't foam after 5 minutes, it may be expired.
Serve warm with a cup of coffee or tea for a delightful treat.
To make the dough ahead of time, refrigerate it after the first rise. Bring it to room temperature before shaping.
