Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Grease and flour an 8x8-inch baking pan. (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a large bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract. (7 minutes)

03

Step

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. (5 minutes)

04

Step

Gently fold in the chopped apples and walnuts. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly. (3 minutes)

05

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes. (40 minutes)

06

Step

While the cake is baking, prepare the topping: In a medium saucepan, combine the brown sugar, milk, and butter. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until the butter is melted and the sugar is dissolved. (5 minutes)

07

Step

Once the cake has baked for 40 minutes, remove it from the oven. Pour the brown sugar topping evenly over the cake. Return the cake to the oven and bake for another 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. (20 minutes)

08

Step

Let the cake cool completely in the pan before cutting and serving. (60 minutes)

For best results, use a mix of apple varieties, such as Honeycrisp and Granny Smith, for a balance of sweetness and tartness.
If you don't have walnuts, pecans or almonds make a great substitute.
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra touch of indulgence.
Store leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
