Follow The Directions

01

Step

Prepare the Crust: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, softened butter, sugar, yeast, and salt. Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a shaggy dough forms. (5 mins)

02

Step

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 3-4 minutes. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

03

Step

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

04

Step

Make the Filling: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and chopped onion, cooking until the beef is browned and the onion is softened. Drain off any excess grease. (5-10 mins)

05

Step

Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and slightly wilted, about 10 minutes. Season generously with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

06

Step

Divide the dough in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one half of the dough to fit an 8-inch square baking dish. Gently press the dough into the bottom and up the sides of the dish.

07

Step

Spoon the beef and cabbage mixture evenly into the crust-lined baking dish. Arrange the cheese slices over the filling.

08

Step

Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the cheese layer. Pinch the edges of the top and bottom crusts together to seal, creating a crimped edge.

09

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the crust begins to lightly brown. Cover the casserole loosely with aluminum foil and continue baking for another 10 minutes, or until the filling is heated through and the crust is golden brown.

10

Step

Remove from the oven and let rest for at least 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

For a richer flavor, try using a combination of ground beef and ground pork.
Feel free to experiment with different cheeses! Cheddar, provolone, or even a spicy pepper jack would be delicious.
If you don't have time to make your own dough, store-bought pizza dough or crescent roll dough can be used as a convenient substitute.
Add other vegetables to the filling! Diced carrots, celery, or bell peppers would all be great additions.

I accidentally added too much salt, so be careful with the seasoning!

I have never made a casserole from scratch before and was a little intimidated. But it was so easy and turned out great!

I found it a bit bland. Next time I'll add more garlic powder and some other spices.

My cabbage was taking a bit too long to cook, so I added a splash of water to the pan and covered it for a few minutes. Worked like a charm!
