For a deeper caramel flavor, use brown butter in the crust. Simply melt the butter and cook until the milk solids brown and it smells nutty before letting it cool slightly to soften.
If you don't have semi-sweet chocolate chips on hand, feel free to substitute with milk chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, or even chopped nuts for a different texture.
These bars are quite rich, so cut them into smaller squares for serving.
Store leftover bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
