Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Prepare coffee cans (see notes).

02

Step

In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. (5 minutes)

03

Step

Beat in the eggs until well combined. (2 minutes)

04

Step

In a separate small bowl, dissolve the baking soda in the milk. (1 minute)

05

Step

Add the milk mixture to the creamed mixture, mixing well. (2 minutes)

06

Step

Gradually add the flour, cream of tartar, and salt, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix. (5 minutes)

07

Step

Stir in the chopped walnuts. (2 minutes)

08

Step

Pour the batter into the prepared coffee cans, filling them 1/2 to 3/4 full. (5 minutes)

09

Step

Bake for 55-65 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. (60 minutes)

10

Step

Let cool in the cans for 10 minutes before carefully removing the bread and allowing it to cool completely on a wire rack. (10 minutes)

For best results, grease and flour the inside of the coffee cans thoroughly before filling with batter. Alternatively, line the cans with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
You can substitute other nuts for the walnuts, such as pecans or almonds.
For a richer flavor, use melted butter instead of shortening.
Ensure your baking soda is fresh for optimal rising.
