Rinse rice using a fine-mesh strainer, gently stirring by hand, until the water runs mostly clear. This removes excess starch and prevents stickiness.

Cover tightly with microwave-safe plastic wrap, a lid, or a plate. Microwave on HIGH for 4 more minutes until the rice is tender and the water is fully absorbed. Let stand, covered, for 6 minutes to allow the steam to evenly distribute and finish cooking the rice.

Uncover and fluff the rice gently with a fork. Taste and if the rice is not yet tender, cover and microwave on HIGH in 1-minute intervals as needed until it reaches the desired consistency.

For even more flavor, try using chicken or vegetable broth instead of water.
Adjust the amount of water slightly depending on your microwave's power. If the rice is too dry, add a tablespoon or two of water in the final minute of cooking.
Be careful when removing the cover after microwaving, as steam will escape.
For brown rice, you'll need to increase the cooking time and water. A good starting point is 2 cups of water and 20-25 minutes of total cooking time.
