Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with 1/3 cup of the finely chopped onion, breaking up the meat as it cooks, until no longer pink (5-7 minutes). Drain off any excess grease and return the skillet to the stove.

02

Step

Stir in the tomato sauce and ketchup until well combined. Add the chili powder, cider vinegar, garlic powder, hot sauce, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat to low and let simmer, uncovered, allowing the sauce to thicken (8-10 minutes). If the sauce becomes too thick, add water, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached.

03

Step

While the sauce simmers, prepare the hot dogs. Steam or simmer the hot dogs in hot water until heated through.

04

Step

Assemble the Michigan Hot Dogs: Place a hot dog in each bun. Spoon 2-3 tablespoons of the sauce generously over the hot dog. Sprinkle with the remaining finely chopped onions and drizzle with yellow mustard.

For an extra layer of flavor, consider browning the ground beef with a touch of smoked paprika.
Adjust the amount of hot sauce to your preference. Start with a teaspoon and add more to taste.
The sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
