Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). (5 minutes)

02

Step
5 mins

In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, vegetable shortening, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. (5 minutes)

03

Step
2 mins

Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and maple extract until well combined. (2 minutes)

04

Step
3 mins

Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. (3 minutes)

05

Step
2 mins

Lightly press the dough evenly into a 10x15-inch baking dish. (2 minutes)

06

Step
15 mins

Bake in the preheated oven until the crust is set and lightly golden brown, approximately 15 minutes. (15 minutes)

07

Step
5 mins

While the crust is baking, melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler or microwave, stirring frequently until smooth. (5 minutes)

08

Step
1 mins

Remove the baked crust from the oven and immediately spread the melted chocolate evenly over the top. (1 minute)

09

Step
1 mins

Sprinkle the chopped walnuts evenly over the melted chocolate. (1 minute)

10

Step
1 hrs

Let the bars cool completely and the chocolate set before cutting into squares or rectangles. This will take about 1 hour. (60 minutes)

For a richer flavor, use browned butter in the crust.
If you don't have maple extract, you can substitute with an equal amount of vanilla extract, but the maple flavor will be less pronounced.
Toast the walnuts before chopping for a nuttier taste.
To easily cut the bars, use a pizza cutter or a long, sharp knife. Running the knife under hot water and drying it between cuts will also help.
Store the baked bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

I added a pinch of sea salt on top of the chocolate before it set, and it was the perfect complement to the sweetness.
