Follow The Directions

01

Step
15 mins

Bloom the Yeast: In a small bowl, gently combine the lukewarm milk and active dry yeast. In a separate, large bowl, whisk together the bread flour, salt, and sugar. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients, then pour in the yeast mixture. Lightly dust the top with flour and allow to rest for approximately 15 minutes, or until the yeast mixture becomes frothy and activated. (Time: 15 minutes)

02

Step
5 mins

Incorporate Wet Ingredients and Knead: Whisk together the egg and vegetable oil. Add this mixture to the bowl with the flour and yeast. Gradually mix until the dough begins to come together. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead with passion and care until it transforms into a smooth and elastic dough, approximately 5 minutes. (Time: 5 minutes)

03

Step
20 mins

First Rest: Place the kneaded dough into a lightly greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and allow the dough to rest and relax for about 20 minutes. This will make it easier to work with. (Time: 20 minutes)

04

Step

Shape the Ensaimadas: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Divide the dough into 15 equal pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll each piece into a thin rope, approximately 12 inches long. Gently roll each rope into a spiral shape, tucking the end underneath to secure. Place the formed Ensaimadas on an ungreased baking sheet, leaving some space between each one.

05

Step

Bake to Golden Perfection: Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 10 minutes, or until the Ensaimadas turn a beautiful golden brown. Keep a watchful eye to prevent over-browning.

For an extra touch of flavor, consider brushing the baked Ensaimadas with melted butter and dusting them generously with powdered sugar.
Ensure the milk is lukewarm, not hot, as excessive heat can kill the yeast.
If you don't have bread flour, you can substitute all-purpose flour, but the texture might be slightly different.
The resting period is crucial for the dough to relax and become easier to handle. Don't skip it!
Be patient when rolling the dough into ropes; the thinner, the better for a delicate, flaky pastry.
