Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. (5 minutes)

02

Step
2 mins

In a large bowl, sift together the self-rising flour, 1/3 cup granulated sugar, and cinnamon. (2 minutes)

03

Step
5 mins

Add the chilled butter pieces to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. (5 minutes)

04

Step
1 mins

In a separate small bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vanilla extract. (1 minute)

05

Step
2 mins

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix. (2 minutes)

06

Step
1 mins

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead until it comes together, about 30 seconds. (1 minute)

07

Step
3 mins

Gently pat or roll the dough out to about 1/2-inch thickness on the prepared baking sheet. (3 minutes)

08

Step
1 mins

Sprinkle the top of the dough evenly with the 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar. (1 minute)

09

Step
20 mins

Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown. (20 minutes)

10

Step
20 mins

Let the shortcake cool completely on the baking sheet before cutting. (20 minutes)

11

Step
15 mins

While the shortcake is cooling, prepare the strawberries: In a medium bowl, combine the sliced strawberries and 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar. Gently toss and let sit for at least 15 minutes, or until the strawberries release their juices. (15 minutes)

12

Step
5 mins

If desired, prepare the whipped cream: In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar (if using) until soft peaks form. (5 minutes)

13

Step
5 mins

Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out as many hearts as possible from the cooled shortcake. (5 minutes)

14

Step
5 mins

To assemble the shortcakes: Place a heart-shaped shortcake on a plate. Top with a spoonful of the macerated strawberries and a dollop of whipped cream. Top with another heart-shaped shortcake and serve immediately. (5 minutes)

For best results, use very cold butter and don't overmix the dough.
If you don't have self-rising flour, you can make your own by combining 1 cup all-purpose flour with 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
Feel free to substitute other berries for the strawberries, such as raspberries or blueberries.
For a richer flavor, brush the shortcakes with melted butter before sprinkling with sugar.
Leftover shortcakes can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
