Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the diced bacon over medium heat until crispy. (approx. 5 minutes)

02

Step

Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, reserving the rendered bacon fat in the skillet.

03

Step

Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the bacon fat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is softened and translucent. (approx. 5 minutes)

04

Step

Add the shredded cabbage, smoked paprika, sugar, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir well to combine, ensuring the cabbage is coated with the bacon fat and seasonings.

05

Step

Cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage begins to wilt and soften. (approx. 10 minutes)

06

Step

Return the cooked bacon to the skillet and stir to incorporate it with the cabbage mixture.

07

Step

Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and simmer until the cabbage reaches your desired level of tenderness, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. (approx. 20-30 minutes)

08

Step

Serve hot or warm as a side dish or enjoy as a light meal.

For a vegetarian option, omit the bacon and use olive oil or butter for cooking.
Feel free to add other vegetables, such as carrots or bell peppers, to the skillet along with the onion.
A splash of apple cider vinegar or balsamic vinegar can add a touch of acidity to balance the richness of the dish.
Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed before serving.
For a smoky flavor, use smoked bacon and/or add a dash of liquid smoke to the cabbage while it simmers.
If you like a little spice, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the skillet along with the paprika.
