Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, 1/2 cup sugar, orange zest, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. (3 minutes)

03

Step

Grate frozen butter into dry ingredients using a box grater. Toss to combine, ensuring butter is evenly distributed and mixture resembles coarse crumbs. (5 minutes)

04

Step

Stir in cranberries. (1 minute)

05

Step

In a separate small mixing bowl, whisk together sour cream, egg, orange juice, and vanilla extract until smooth. (2 minutes)

06

Step

Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and gently mix until dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix; a few streaks of flour are okay. (3 minutes)

07

Step

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and form into a 10-inch circular mound. Press down gently to about 3/4-inch thickness. (2 minutes)

08

Step

Sprinkle top of the dough evenly with remaining 3 tablespoons sugar. (1 minute)

09

Step

Using a sharp knife or bench scraper, cut circle into 8 triangles. Carefully transfer triangles to prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart. (3 minutes)

10

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, 17 to 20 minutes. Let cool slightly on baking sheet before serving warm or at room temperature.

For best results, ensure your butter is very cold. Freezing it before grating helps create a flakier scone.
Don't overmix the dough! Overmixing develops the gluten, resulting in a tough scone.
If the dough seems too dry, add orange juice one tablespoon at a time until it comes together.
These scones are delicious served with clotted cream or a dollop of Greek yogurt.
