For an extra layer of flavor, sauté 1/2 cup of chopped onion and 2 cloves of minced garlic in butter before adding to the soup mixture. Fresh green beans can be used in place of frozen. Increase simmering time until they are tender-crisp. To prevent the French-fried onions from burning, add them during the last 15 minutes of baking. For a richer flavor, use half-and-half or heavy cream instead of milk.
