For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce. Fresh pineapple can be substituted for canned, but be sure to adjust the sugar accordingly as fresh pineapple is less sweet. If you don't have a slow cooker, you can simmer the meatballs in the sauce on the stovetop over low heat for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
