Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet. (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a large bowl, whisk together whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cinnamon. (2 minutes)

03

Step

Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. (5 minutes)

04

Step

Stir in chopped dates and chocolate chips. (1 minute)

05

Step

Gradually add milk, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix. (2 minutes)

06

Step

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat into a circle about 1/2 inch thick. (3 minutes)

07

Step

Use a round cookie cutter (or a knife) to cut out scones. (2 minutes)

08

Step

Place scones on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with milk and sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. (3 minutes)

09

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes.

For best results, use very cold butter. You can even chill the flour mixture and the dates and chocolate chips before combining.
Don't overmix the dough, or the scones will be tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
For a richer flavor, try using dark chocolate chips or adding a splash of vanilla extract to the milk.
These scones are best enjoyed fresh, but they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

The scones were a bit dry for me. I might try adding a little more milk next time.
