Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Prepare Ingredients: Gather all ingredients and have them prepped and ready to go. (5 minutes)

02

Step
2 mins

Prepare Butter Mixture: In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter and canola oil. Reserve 2 teaspoons of this mixture for cooking the onions and ham. (2 minutes)

03

Step
1 mins

Sear Hash Browns: Heat the remaining butter mixture in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, using only half of the skillet. Place the partially thawed hash browns onto the buttered side of the skillet, forming a round patty about 5 inches in diameter. (1 minute)

04

Step
6 mins

Cook First Side: Cook the hash browns undisturbed until golden brown and crispy around the edges. This should take approximately 5-7 minutes.

05

Step
4 mins

Flip and Cook Second Side: Carefully flip the hash brown patty and continue cooking on the other side until equally golden brown and crispy, another 4-5 minutes.

06

Step
4 mins

Sauté Toppings: While the second side of the hash browns is cooking, add the reserved butter mixture to the empty side of the skillet. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring frequently, until softened and translucent, about 2 minutes. Add the diced ham (or your chosen protein) to the onions and cook for another 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through.

07

Step
1 mins

Assemble and Melt Cheese: Transfer the sautéed onions and ham evenly over the top of the cooked hash browns. Place the cheese slice on top. Turn off the heat, but leave the skillet on the warm burner. (1 minute)

08

Step
1 mins

Melt and Serve: Allow the cheese to melt completely from the residual heat, about 1-2 minutes. Serve immediately and enjoy your customized hash browns!

For extra crispy hash browns, make sure they are as dry as possible before adding them to the skillet. Pat them dry with paper towels if needed.
Feel free to customize your toppings! Consider adding diced bell peppers, jalapeños, or mushrooms to the onions.
If you don’t have a nonstick skillet, make sure to use plenty of oil or butter to prevent sticking.
For a vegetarian option, omit the ham and add extra vegetables like spinach or mushrooms.
To get a good crust, don't overcrowd the pan. If you're making a large batch, cook the hash browns in batches.
You can also use a griddle for this recipe, which is great for making a large batch at once.

I was skeptical, but these were surprisingly good! I'll be making these every weekend.

The key is definitely getting the hash browns crispy on both sides. I used a cast iron skillet and they turned out perfect.

These were amazing! So easy to make and tasted just like Waffle House. I added some jalapeños for a little kick.

  • Estrella Gerhold

So much better than the frozen kind! I love being able to customize the toppings.

My family loved these. I used bacon instead of ham and cheddar cheese. Will definitely be making these again!
