Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. (10 minutes)

03

Step

Reserve 1 3/4 cups of the crumb mixture for the streusel topping. Press the remaining crumb mixture firmly into the bottom of an ungreased 13x9 inch baking pan. (5 minutes)

04

Step

Bake the crust for 15 minutes, or until lightly golden.

05

Step

While the crust is baking, arrange the apple slices evenly over the partially baked crust. (5 minutes)

06

Step

In a medium bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk and 1/2 cup of the caramel topping until smooth. Pour the mixture evenly over the apples. (3 minutes)

07

Step

Add the chopped walnuts to the reserved crumb mixture and mix well. Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the apple layer. (2 minutes)

08

Step

Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the streusel topping is golden brown. (45-50 minutes)

09

Step

Let the squares cool in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into squares. (30 minutes)

10

Step

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of the remaining caramel topping, if desired.

For best results, use cold butter when making the crust and streusel. This will help create a more tender and crumbly texture.
Feel free to experiment with different types of apples, such as Gala or Fuji, to find your favorite combination of sweetness and tartness.
If you don't have walnuts or pecans on hand, you can substitute other nuts like almonds or hazelnuts, or simply leave them out.
These squares can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat gently before serving for the best taste and texture.

I used Granny Smith apples and they were perfect. Not too sweet, with a nice tartness.

My family devoured these! I added a pinch of cardamom to the streusel for a little extra warmth.

Next time, I'm going to try using a different kind of nut, like macadamia nuts.
