Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a large bowl, combine 1 ½ cups of flour, sugar, yeast, 2 teaspoons basil, salt, oregano, garlic powder, and rosemary. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

02

Step

In a microwave-safe bowl, combine milk, water, and butter. Microwave until butter is melted, approximately 30 seconds. Pour the melted mixture over the flour mixture and beat until the dough is just moistened. Add the egg and beat until smooth. Stir in the remaining 3 cups of flour until a soft dough forms. (Prep time: 10 minutes)

03

Step

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 4 minutes. Cover the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes. (Kneading & Resting: 14 minutes)

04

Step

Divide the dough into three equal portions. Shape each portion into a 15-inch rope. Transfer the ropes to a greased baking sheet and braid them together. Pinch the ends to seal and tuck them under the braid. Cover the braid and let it rise until it has doubled in volume, about 25 minutes. (Shaping & Proofing: 30 minutes)

05

Step

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Brush the top of the braid with olive oil and sprinkle with the remaining 1 teaspoon of dried basil. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

06

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 20 to 25 minutes. Cool on the baking sheet or transfer to a wire rack. (Baking & Cooling: 20-25 minutes + cooling time)

For a richer flavor, use olive oil instead of butter in the dough.
If the dough is too sticky, add flour, one tablespoon at a time.
Ensure the milk and water mixture isn't too hot, as it can kill the yeast.
For a golden crust, consider an egg wash before baking.
