Follow The Directions

01

Step

Step 1: Prepare the Dish (5 minutes). Spray a 9x13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray.

02

Step

Step 2: Create the Apple Base (10 minutes). In the prepared casserole dish, mix brown sugar, melted butter, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Add the sliced apples, dried cranberries, and chopped pecans; toss to coat evenly. Spread the apple mixture uniformly across the bottom of the dish.

03

Step

Step 3: Arrange the Bread (5 minutes). Arrange the Italian bread slices atop the apple mixture, slightly overlapping, until the entire apple layer is completely covered.

04

Step

Step 4: Soak the Bread (5 minutes). In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg substitute, skim milk, vanilla extract, and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon. Evenly pour this mixture over the bread slices. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight (up to 24 hours).

05

Step

Step 5: Preheat the Oven (10 minutes). Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

06

Step

Step 6: Bake (45 minutes). Bake the covered casserole dish in the preheated oven for 40 minutes. Then, remove the aluminum foil and continue baking until the top is lightly browned and the egg mixture is set, approximately 5 more minutes.

07

Step

Step 7: Cool and Serve (5 minutes). Let the baked French toast cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

For a richer flavor, substitute whole milk for skim milk and use real butter instead of light butter.
Feel free to experiment with different types of apples, such as Honeycrisp or Fuji, for varied flavor profiles.
If you don't have pecans on hand, walnuts or almonds make excellent substitutes.
Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup or a dusting of powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.
