Follow The Directions

01

Step

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Whisk gently to combine. Let stand for 8 minutes, or until the yeast is foamy, indicating it is active. (8 minutes)

02

Step

Add 3 cups of flour, 3 tablespoons of softened butter, the egg, and salt to the bowl. Fit the mixer with the dough hook attachment. Turn the mixer to medium speed and mix until the dough comes together into a shaggy ball. Reduce the speed to medium-low and knead for 3 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too wet and sticky, add additional flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it forms a cohesive ball that slightly pulls away from the sides of the bowl. (3 minutes)

03

Step

Cover the bowl with a clean tea towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours. (60-90 minutes)

04

Step

Lightly flour a clean work surface. Gently turn the dough out onto the surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth, round ball.

05

Step

Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Arrange the dough balls evenly in the prepared dish. Cover loosely with the tea towel and let rise again until well-risen and puffy, about 30 to 40 minutes. (30-40 minutes)

06

Step

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

07

Step

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and baked through. (20-25 minutes)

08

Step

Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool in the pan for a few minutes. Brush the remaining 1 tablespoon of softened butter over the tops of the warm rolls. The butter will melt and soak into the rolls, adding extra richness and flavor.

For an even richer flavor, try using melted butter instead of softened butter in the dough.
If you don't have a stand mixer, you can knead the dough by hand on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes.
To make ahead, you can prepare the dough through step 4, then refrigerate the shaped rolls overnight. Let them come to room temperature and rise for the final proof before baking.

I didn’t have instant yeast, so I used active dry yeast and let it sit in the water for 10 minutes. It worked great!

I added a touch of honey to the dough for a slightly sweeter flavor, and it was a hit!

I like to add a sprinkle of sea salt on top before baking for a savory-sweet flavor.
