Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). (5 minutes)

02

Step

Gently lay bottom pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate.

03

Step

In a large bowl, combine mulberries, granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, ground nutmeg, ground allspice, and salt. Gently fold the ingredients together with a wooden spoon until just blended. Be careful not to crush the berries. (3 to 5 minutes)

04

Step

Pour the mulberry mixture into the bottom pie crust. Cover with the top crust, seal the edges by crimping or using a fork, and cut several slits in the top crust with a sharp knife to allow steam to escape. (5 minutes)

05

Step

Refrigerate the pie for 10 to 20 minutes to help the sealed edges firm up, which prevents the filling from bubbling out during baking.

06

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Then, reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and continue baking until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly, about 30 minutes. If the crust begins to brown too quickly, cover the edges with foil. (45 minutes)

For a richer flavor, try adding a tablespoon of butter, cut into small pieces, to the mulberry filling before covering with the top crust.
If fresh mulberries are not available, frozen mulberries can be used. Thaw them slightly and drain off any excess liquid before using.
A lattice crust adds an elegant touch to this pie and provides extra ventilation.
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for the perfect dessert.

I used frozen mulberries since fresh ones aren't in season yet, and it still turned out great!

I've made this pie twice now, and it's a huge hit every time. The refrigeration step really makes a difference in preventing a soggy crust.
