Follow The Directions

01

Step

Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. (Prep time: 2 minutes)

02

Step

While the water heats, halve each hot dog crosswise. (Prep time: 1 minute)

03

Step

On one half of each hot dog, make 3 evenly spaced cuts along one side, starting from the cut edge and stopping about ⅓ of the way from the rounded end. These cuts will form four 'legs'. (Prep time: 3 minutes)

04

Step

Flip the hot dog half over and repeat the process, making 3 more cuts on the opposite side, creating a total of eight 'legs' for each octodog. (Prep time: 3 minutes)

05

Step

Carefully place the prepared octodogs into the boiling water. (Prep time: <1 minute)

06

Step

Cook the octodogs until they are heated through and the 'legs' curl outwards, resembling a playful octopus. This should take approximately 1 minute. (Cook time: 1 minute)

07

Step

Remove the cooked octodogs from the water and let them cool slightly before serving. (Prep time: <1 minute)

For a more appealing presentation, use all-beef hot dogs that are naturally casing.
Serve these octodogs with your favorite condiments, such as ketchup, mustard, or relish.
Get creative with the 'eyes' – use small dots of mustard, ketchup, or even tiny pieces of black olive.

These were so much fun to make with my kids! They loved helping cut the legs and watching them curl up in the boiling water.

  • Neva Hudson

I found that slightly undercooking them helped prevent the legs from breaking off. They still curled up nicely!

  • Virgil Yost

A simple but brilliant idea! I will be making these for my son's lunchbox from now on.

  • Stephany Mertz

I brought these to a birthday party and they were a huge hit. All the kids (and adults!) were amazed by them.
