Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat, cook bacon, turning occasionally, until fat begins to render. (Approx. 5 minutes)

02

Step

Drain and discard half of the bacon drippings.

03

Step

Reduce heat to medium; add onion. Cook, stirring often, until softened. (Approx. 5 minutes)

04

Step

Add minced garlic, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper; cook and stir until fragrant. (Approx. 2 minutes)

05

Step

Increase heat to high. Add 3 cups water to the pot; bring to a boil, scraping the browned bits off the bottom of the pot with a wooden spoon.

06

Step

Add collard greens and remaining 1 cup water; bring to a boil.

07

Step

Reduce heat; simmer gently until greens are tender. (Approx. 1 hour)

For a richer flavor, use smoked bacon. You can also add a splash of apple cider vinegar for a tangy twist. Adjust red pepper flakes to your desired level of spiciness. Serve with a side of cornbread for the ultimate Southern experience.
